平治之亂是指1159年，在保元之乱中，为后白河天皇立了大功的源氏家族首领源义朝，因为不满自己的封位比平氏家族首领平清盛低，乘平氏家族离开京城参拜神社之机，联合藤原信赖拘禁后白河上皇和二條天皇，甚至杀死了天皇的亲信。在外的平清盛闻讯，立刻赶回京城击败源义朝，最後源义朝在逃至尾张时被手下杀死。源氏一族只余下义朝的儿子赖朝流放伊豆，以及少数几名幼子寄放佛寺。经此一事，平氏彻底专揽了朝政。
因为此变发生于二條天皇平治元年，故史称平治之乱。
