Me 209戰鬥機有兩種，第一種是只有原型機（編號V1-V4，只生產四架）的競速機版，使用為了競速而特殊設計的DB 601ARJ發動機，Me 209是梅塞施密特飞机厂在当时纳粹空军主力战斗机Bf 109基础上专门改装的创纪录特种飞机。该机在1938年4月26日，由里·弗·温德尔（Fritz Wendel）驾驶创下755.138千米／小时活塞螺桨飞机平飞速度世界绝对记录，不過為了政治宣傳當時納粹德國對外宣稱創造新紀錄的是Me 109R，此纪录一直保持到1969年。
這個飛機設計上無法實用化的關鍵之一是他的散熱系統：他使用的是1930年代 競速機很常使用的表面蒸發散熱系統，也就是說，液冷發動機使用的冷卻水會在機身或者是機翼的表面通過的同時，以蒸發少量的水來換取液體的降溫，在散熱效果上很好，不過冷卻水同時也會流失。根據一些資料顯示，Me 209每分鐘會流失4.5到7公升的水，假如要執行一個30分鐘的任務所需要的水，這架飛機的重量是很可觀了。
實際上有考慮進入生產的是後來被稱為Me 209五號原型機（V-5，正式編號Me 209Ⅱ）的設計，從六號原型機開始採用Jumo213E發動機加上前端的環型散熱器，在性能上沒有什麼問題，不過在生產上受到Fw 190D所需要進行的改變，包括生產線方面比Me 209-II戰鬥機要少很多，而且Me 209Ⅱ的進度也偏慢，所以當Fw 190D9開始服役之後，Me 209Ⅱ的生產就被取消。
