Contents 1 Life 2 Works 3 Notes 4 References 5 External links Life Antonio Smareglia was born in Pola (in the Istrian peninsula, under the Austria-Hungarian Empire, currently in Croatia). In the house where he was born in Via Nettuno there is now a small museum of his life and work. His father Francesco Smareglia from Pola [1] was Italian, his mother Giulia Stiglich from Lovran was Croatian. [2] The composer chose to set his most famous opera, Nozze istriane , in his grandfather’s village, [2] Dignano d'Istria. Smareglia married Maria Jetti Polla, and they had five children. He became blind at the age of 46. Since then he composed his music dictating to his sons, Ariberto and Mario, and to his students and friends including Primo dalla Zonca, Gastone Zuccoli, and Vito Levi. Sinigaglia knew the leading figures of thought, arts and science that lived in the city at the time, such as Galileo Ferraris, Cesare Lombroso, and Leonardo Bistolfi. Though he had some lessons from Antonino Titone and Turi Belfiore, he is primarily self-taught as a composer. After his classical studies and a few years of university in his home city, in 1969 he moved to Rome, where he attended Franco Evangelisti's course in electronic music at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Osmond-Smith 2001). In 1977, Sciarrino moved from Rome to Milan, where he taught at the conservatory until 1982. By this time his compositional career had expanded to the point where he could withdraw from teaching, and he moved to Città di Castello, in Umbria, where he has lived ever since. ...
