愛爾蘭人跳的踢踏舞強調「踩」和「踏」，是當地民族舞蹈的一種，舞者保持上半身不動，僅靠著下半身的震動來營造視聽效果，而舞者整體隊形的美感是愛爾蘭人跳踢踏舞的特色，也是一種禮儀。 又有軟鞋及硬鞋的分别，在软鞋舞方面，男生與女生所跳的是不同的，因为軟鞋舞男女生的鞋子不同，女生方面有点像是芭蕾舞鞋，不会发出声响，而男生的鞋後根部分则是硬的,所以可以發出聲音，在台灣受到大家所喜爱的『火焰之舞』(Feet of Flames)、『大河之舞』[1](River Dance)、『魔力之舞』(Magic of Dance)…等，舞者的上半身會有些許的動作，那是為了增加舞蹈效果，而經由舞者自行设计的，在傳統的Irish dancing中是只有下半身的動作的。[2]
