Archduke Joseph Árpád Benedikt Ferdinand Franz Maria Gabriel (Hungarian: Habsburg–Lotaringiai József Árpád; 8 February 1933 – 30 April 2017)[1][2] was a member of the Hungarian Palatine branch of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.


He was born in Budapest, the son of Archduke Joseph Francis of Austria and his wife, Princess Anna of Saxony. He was the great-grandson of Archduchess Gisela of Austria.[3]


He received a degree in economics from the University of Lisbon.

Family



Joseph married Princess Maria von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg, born 1935, daughter of Karl, 8th Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg and Carolina dei Conti Rignon. They married civilly on 25 August 1956 and religiously on 12 September 1956 in Bronnbach, Wertheim am Main, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.[4][5]


They had eight children:[4][5]



  • Archduke Joseph Karl (1957–1957)

  • Archduchess Milona (born 1958); in 1996, she married Charles-Henry de Rambures (born 1968).

  • Archduke Joseph Karl (born 1960); in 1990 he married Princess Margarete von Hohenberg, granddaughter of Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg.

  • Archduchess Maria Christine (born 1961); in 1988 she married Raymond van der Meide (born 1959).

  • Archduke Andreas-Augustinus (born 1963); in 1994 he married Countess Marie-Christine von Hatzfeldt-Dönhoff (born 1968).

  • Archduchess Alexandra (born 1965); in 1999 she married Wilhelmus de Wit (born 1965).

  • Archduke Nicolaus (born 1973); in 2002 he married Eugenia de Calonje Gurrea.

  • Archduke Johannes (born 1975); in 2009, he married María Gabriela Montenegro Villamizar.
