紫珠属(学名:Callicarpa)是唇形科中的一个属,其中的植物主要是灌木和小型的树。根据不同的生物学家的定义它有40到150个种。大多数这些种生长在亚洲东部和东南部,其它生长在澳大利亚、北美洲的东南部和中美洲。
形態
紫珠属中生长在温带的种是落叶植物,生长在热带的种是常绿植物。叶简单,生长在茎的两侧,5至25厘米长。花成簇,白色至粉色。果实是浆果,直径2至5毫米,粉色至红紫色,带有一种非常不寻常的金属光泽。叶子落掉后它们在光秃秃的树干上成簇非常明显。浆果可以一直维持到冬天或者旱季,是鸟和其它动物的重要食物。不过动物只有在找不到其它事物时才会吃紫珠属的果实。紫珠属的果实味道非常不好,不适宜人吃。一些鱗翅目动物的幼虫吃紫珠属的果实。
应用
美洲紫珠是一种自然的驱虫剂。其中有四种物质被发现有驱虫效应,包括冰片[1]。它也对传播黄热病、疟疾的蚊子和传播莱姆病的蜱有驱虫效应。美国农业部农业科研局把这个效应申报了专利[2]。
