Overview

An old settlement, Haylan is the site of numerous ancient ruins and buildings, many of obscure origins. Somaliland in general is home to numerous such archaeological sites. However, many of these old structures have yet to be properly explored, a process which would help shed further light on local history and facilitate their preservation for posterity.[1]

Located near Badhan, the town is also where Sheikh Darod, the founding father of the Darod clan, lived and was buried. Sheikh Darod's wife, Dobira, is also buried here.

Administrative divisions

In 2006, the autonomous Puntland region in northeastern Somalia established a new province named after the town, of which the capital is Dhahar. It borders Bari to the east, Karkaar to the south, and Sanaag to the west.

As of the province is claimed by Puntland, Somaliland has administered and has full ownership of the region as to reassure it's borders with the "South"

The Haylan province has four districts:

  • Buran

  • El Ayo

  • Dhahar

  • Hingalol
