棒旋星系指的是中間具有由恆星聚集組成短棒形狀的螺旋星系。大約三分之二的螺旋星系是棒旋星系。短棒通常會影響在棒旋星系裏的恆星與星際氣體的運動，它也會影響旋臂。棒旋星系的旋臂則看似由短棒的末端湧現。而在普通的螺旋星系，恆星都是由核心直接湧出的；在星系分類法以符號SB表示。
